About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Other

Come and join us to plant a tree in the National Forest, one of the boldest environmentally-led regeneration initiatives in the country.

Our Plant a Tree events offer a friendly, and enjoyable experience at which you can celebrate or remember whilst contributing to the continuing growth of the National Forest at our Brookvale Wood site in Groby, Leicestershire, a growing woodland just a short drive from the M1. You will be warmly welcomed by our team, who are always on hand to offer advice, answer questions and help make your day special.

On arrival at Brookvale Wood you will be greeted by a member of our team, and after checking in will be directed to the planting field where you will learn about the history and vision of the National Forest. You will then be invited to select and plant your sapling from a range of native broadleaf species with plenty of opportunities to take photographs. Our team are there to make your day a memorable one so if you have any questions, please ask!

Please note that the walk to the planting field takes around 20 minutes and is across fields and uneven grassy paths, which can be very muddy at times and will be difficult for people with limited mobility. Please contact us prior to booking if you have any concerns or questions.

Special thanks to our sponsor Omexom for supporting Plant a Tree.

About the National Forest

Since the early 1990s, millions of trees have been planted across 200 square miles of the midlands, an area that was previously one of the least wooded parts of the country, transforming a post-industrial landscape and linking the ancient remnant forests of Charnwood and Needwood. Today, with the support of partners and communities, the National Forest is continuing to plant trees, care for woodlands, create, connect and manage habitats, increase biodiversity and grow a greener, healthier and more sustainable future together.

Frequently asked questions

Is it easy to get to the planting field?

The planting location is around a 15-minute / 0.5km walk from the car park across uneven, muddy ground and fields which is unfortunately often unsuitable for those with limited mobility. Please contact us prior to booking if you have any questions or concerns.

How many trees can I/we plant?

You can plant the number of trees as specified by your ticket type. If you or any spectators wish to plant additional trees these must be purchased in advance; additional trees/tickets are not available to purchase on the day.

How many people can I bring and how many parking spaces are included?

You are welcome to bring as many people as you want, but due to limited parking please make sure you stick to the parking allocation for your ticket type (1 tree: 1 parking space; 2 trees: 1 parking space; 5 trees: 2 parking spaces; 12 trees: 3 parking spaces)

What happens at the planting event?

On arrival, you will be greeted by our team, and after checking in directed to the planting field. After a brief introduction, you will be guided to select and plant your saplings by one of the team.

Is it possible to have a quieter space for planting my tree(s) away from the rest of the event?

If you need a quieter spot for planting, please say so when booking or on the day, and we will do our best to ensure this is possible.

Can I mark the tree in some way eg by a tag or plaque?

No. We encourage you to consider the tree as part of the growing woodland, rather than an individual tree, and do not permit the labelling of trees, installation or plaques, or other permanent markers.

Can I scatter the ashes of a loved one at the base of a tree?

Yes. Ashes may be placed beneath the tree during the planting process, but we cannot permit the burial of containers. Please bear in mind that as it is not a formal burial site, other people will be planting at the same time.

What type of tree will I be planting?

We plant broadleaf trees that are native to the area; currently these include hazel, lime, oak, rowan, silver birch and wild cherry. The tree you plant will be a sapling of around 30cm tall - this is the size foresters recommend as they transplant well and establish quickly.

What should I bring / wear?

Please dress for the weather, and remember it might be muddy underfoot! Good strong footwear (wellingtons / walking boots) and warm/waterproof clothing are recommended. We have spades available on site, but please feel free to bring your own if you have one.

Will I have to dig the hole?

A member of the NFC staff will be there to help you if required. A family member, friend or a member of the NFC team can plant your tree on your behalf if you prefer.

What happens to the trees after the planting event?

The trees will be maintained as part of an overall maintenance programme for the young woodland. For the first 3-4 years, the area around the base of the tree will be sprayed twice a year to reduce competition from grass and weeds, and the grass between rows may be mown occasionally.

What happens if the tree I plant dies?

We normally expect some losses (maybe 5%); these will be replaced the following winter.

Will the trees ever be cut down?

Quite possibly, in the fullness of time, as part of recommended forestry practice. Brookvale Wood will be managed as a woodland rather than a collection of individual trees. When the trees are around 20 years old they will be thinned to give space for the rest to develop and the woodland to thrive.

Can I bring my dog to the planting event?

Yes, you may bring your dog, but it must be kept on a lead and under your control at all times. Please ensure you clear up and take away any 'mess'.

Can I bring my own tree grown at home / plant flower or bulbs around my tree?

No. Young trees are weeded in the first 3 years which includes spraying off any vegetation at the base of the trees. Many species are also inappropriate to the natural balance of a native woodland.

Can I revisit the woodland in the future?

Yes, you can visit the site at any time - the sites have full, informal public access from the public footpath networks. Maps will be available on the day of the planting event.

What happens if I can no longer make the planting date?

We are unable to offer refunds but please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend and we will plant a tree on your behalf.
