Event description

Description

Our next two more specialist courses are on the Plants in Garden History. They will be complementary rather than chronological in content, so can be taken separately.

As usual courses will be based at the Institute of Historical Research in Bloomsbury, which is the world’s leading centre for research into all aspects of History, and runs the country’s only MA course in Garden History.

Classes will be small [max size 16] with lively illustrated lectures, visits, opportunities for discussion and further personal reading & research suggestions if you wish.

We have several guest lectuers this term, notably Mark Spencer who was formerly a curator at the Natural History Museum and is now a freelance forensic botanist as well as being curator of botany at the Linnean Society. We are also pleased to welcome Jennifer Potter, the author of Strange Blooms, the biography of the Tradescants and Catherine Horwood, author of Gardening Women and Potted History: The Story of Plants in the Home.

The class will normally be held on Tuesday mornings from 10.30-1.00, but there are also some off-site visits including some which are planned to be all day . Unfortunately many places that used to welcome visitors without charge are now unable to do so, and are imposing quite substantial fees for group visits like ours which has put our costs up considerably. The course fee is £265 [plus Eventbrite's booking fee]. Please note that neither transport costs or the costs of admission to Kew or Chelsea Physic are included in the fee. This allows you the flexibility of making your own travel arrangements, and taking advantage of Friends admission or concessionary prices where appropriate. Visits will go ahead whatever the weather - so come prepared!

We often have a waiting list for places on our courses so if you book a place but are unable to use it for any reason, then email us and we will try and resell it if we can. In that case we will be happy to refund your payment less Eventbrite's fees, otherwise we regret we cannot offer a refund. In the unlikely event of a cancellation of a lecture for any reason we will endeavour to arrange a replacement session as soon as possible.
