Event description
Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Workshop Sponsored By the Energy And Environment Institute

About this Event

The SCAR Plastic in Polar Environments Group look forward to welcoming you to the Plastic in the Polar Environment Workshop on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 October 2019.

Sponsored by the Energy and Environment, the Conference will be held in the Canham Turner Building at The University of Hull.

Plastic, and most recently, micro- and nanoplastic pollution is now widely accepted to be one of the world’s biggest environmental concerns, and is found even in the world’s most remote habitats including both Polar regions. While there has been a great deal of research into plastic pollution in more populated areas of the world, little is known about the impacts of plastics on Polar Regions. This is an emerging and timely area of research that necessitates a co-ordinated scientific focus. The SCAR action group Plastic in Polar Environments was formed to address some of these issues and bring together experts and interested parties from across the globe.

Our Plastic in the Polar Environment Workshop will continue the work to:

• Collate information on plastic pollution in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.

• Assess occurrence, distribution, source and fate of plastics (nano, micro and macro) in Polar regions.

• Estimate current levels of pollution in the poles and evaluate the impact on the ecosystem.

• Generate a best practice protocol for plastic collection and analysis in the Polar Regions.

This information will feed into policy (Via SCAR and the Arctic Council) and inform national operators’ environmental codes.
