Women, and particularly women in sport, are under-represented on Wikipedia, both in terms of content and in editorial roles. We want to change that with your help!

We have recently begun a Wikipedia editing project (Play Like A Lassie), aimed at training new women editors and contributing at least ten new Wikipedia entries relating to women's sport in Scotland, that will include editing bios, groups and organisations and significant places or events associated with sport. The West Boathouse project are partnering with Glasgow Caledonian University and have secured funding from Santander for two student placements to help support research and volunteers. The volunteers will be drawn from the West Boathouse volunteers pool and other groups and individuals with an interest in women’s sport, and those keen to learn more about how to contribute to Wikipedia.

The project will also offer the opportunity to contribute to the wider Wikimedia archive through photography, audio and video content creation, recording sporting places. This content will be uploaded and released under Creative Commons licence. This creates a wider range of opportunities for people less confident or interested in Wikipedia editing, e.g. local local walking groups, youth groups etc.

Core aims:

• Create at least 10 new entries on Wikipedia and augment content on stub entries

• Train at least 10 new editors

• Provide wider opportunities for volunteering through alternative content creation (e.g. photography Wikiwalks)

• Create an archive of sporting photographs, audio and video

• Track and evaluate the project using Wikimedia's analytics, volunteer feedback and interviews

• Celebrate volunteers contributions through blogs, podcasts, Sporting Heritage Day and Wiki Loves Monuments
