Play writing workshop: Adaptation

About this Event

Led by award-winning playwright Bea Roberts (The Borrowers, Tobacco Factory), This workshop will guide you through the process of adapting stories for the stage.

Bea Roberts won the inaugural Theatre503 Playwriting Award for her play And Then Come The Nightjars – which also earned her a place as a 2016 Finalist for the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Her critically acclaimed one woman/no woman show Infinity Pool, A Modern Re-telling of Madame Bovary garnered a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe and a Total Theatre Award nomination. She was a recipient of the J.B. Priestley Award from the Royal Literary Fund and, in 2018, won a UK Theatre Award for her adaptation of Little Mermaid. She is currently under commission from the National Theatre and the RSC.

This workshop is run by Papatango. Papatango run free opportunities to launch new playwrights, who have gone on to win BAFTA, OffWestEnd, Royal National Theatre and Alfred Fagon awards. New plays developed or produced by Papatango have premiered worldwide and in the West End. Their book Being A Playwright: A Career Guide for Writers has been called “a bible for playwrights” (Steve Waters, playwright and UEA lecturer in Creative Writing) and “an excellent tool for playwrights” (Indhu Rubasingham, artistic director of Kiln Theatre).

The session is free, and anyone with mobility needs or in need of financial assistance can apply to Papatango for bursaries to cover travel costs. Anyone with specific access needs can also request support. Please book a space on Eventbrite and then email participate@papatango.co.uk if you have any such requests; please bear in mind that the more notice we have, the more likely it is that we will be able to make the arrangements.
