Event description

Description

This workshop event will explore what happens when we observe and followi children's interests as they explore digital technologies and creative activities. The first part of the workshop will involve academics from Sheffield Institute of Education sharing findings from studies which explore: young children's explorations of space and materials in an early years setting; children's online and offline activity in a Year 6 Minecraft club; and KS2 children’s creative activity in imagined worlds. Presenters will use vivid examples of children's activity to illustrate relationships between children's play and literacy and invite participants to see the novel and interesting in children's practices.

During the second part of the workshop, participants will be invited to bring along and share their own experiences of literacies from their home and community experiences, and contribute to a discussion around the significance of children's playful and spontaneous engagement with literacy. Participants are invited to bring along their own experiences of children's engagement in literacies as parents, practitioners or researchers, and jointly consider what such open ended approaches offer to literacy educators and those interested in children's play and learning. This event is designed for teachers, parents, educational practitioners, policy makers, consultants, educational leaders, and other interested parties.
