Playing our part: a review of graduate and registered mental health nurses in England

Last year NHS England accepted a 5 year blueprint (Mental Health Five Year Review) to address the growing crisis in mental health services and pledged further investment to support necessary changes. The blueprint and promised investment has been welcomed by charities, NHS England and people who use services.
The Foundation of Nursing Studies committed to undertake a review of practising mental health nursing and its contribution to service provision.Professor Butterworth has led this review, consulting with students, practitioners, educators, service users and carers.

Professor Butterworth is presently Chairman of the Foundation of Nursing Studies and a Trustee of the RCN Foundation. In his 50 year career he has been a clinical nurse, teacher, researcher, Professor, Dean of School, University Pro Vice Chancellor, NHS Chief Executive, Board Trustee and an NHS Board Chairman. He has been the Chair of the UK Council of Deans, Director of a WHO Collaborating Centre in Manchester and conducted work for the UK Government. He has published extensively (Research gate rating 26.5) on his work in clinical supervision, mental health, workforce development and the development of clinical academic careers, he has supervised 26 students to the successful completion of their PhDs.
