Event description

Description

Do you believe strongly that children have a right to play out in the streets where they live?

Do you want to do any or all of the following...

  • spread the 'playing out' idea where you live
  • encourage your council to support play streets
  • stand up for children's need and right to play out in your area
  • become part of the growing movement and meet other street play enthusiasts

.... or you might be playing out in a part of the country where no-one else is, and you need support?

If so, this day is for you!

If you are a parent, resident or community activist interested in promoting street play, come and join us at the 7th annual Playing Out Activator Day in Bristol on Saturday 28 March.

It will be a relaxed, welcoming, fun and inspiring event with delicious food provided, of course!

What will happen at the event?

A full outline of the day will be uploaded here shortly. You can expect to meet a really friendly group; a mixture of experienced and inexperienced activators, with some short speaking sessions and lots of opportunity for discussion and ideas sharing, learning from others all over the country.

You don't need to have lots of -or any- experience of street organising, you only need to bring yourself and your own experiences as a parent or community activator and you'll be warmly welcome to this community.

Past attendees have described it as 'inspiring' 'fun' 'friendly' 'inclusive' 'energising' 'motivating' 'open' 'lively' 'enabling', 'gentle'... to list a few!

How much will it cost?

This year we are asking for £10 to cover the cost of the day and lunch, but if this and/or travel and accommodation costs are a problem we can help cover them so please don't let this be a barrier to joining us.

There will also be a shared meal provided for anyone arriving in Bristol on the Friday night - please let us know if you want to come!

Feedback from parents/activators at previous events:

"Fill yourself with the energy of playing out and the drive for children's play"

"I feel inspired to get more involved and to make a change"

"Worthwhile, super informative, welcoming, warm and bubbly"

"Necessary, informative, I don't feel so lonely now"

About Playing Out

Playing Out is the national organisation supporting a growing parent-led street play movement across the UK. We originated the "temporary play street" model in Bristol, where we are still based, and have since:

  • supported 74 local authorities to put street play schemes in place
  • enabled over 1100 street communities to 'play out' regularly, directly benefitting over 30,000 children across the UK
  • grown a movement of active parents who want change

Our aim is to grow this movement until street play becomes a normal part of life again for all children.

A note on accessibility

The venue is fully wheelchair accessible including toilets. When you book a ticket you will be asked to let us know about anything else we can do to make this event accessible for you (if you prefer you are welcome to email Lucy on lucy@playingout.net), as well as your dietary requirements for lunch.

FAQs

What if I can't afford to pay travel or accommodation costs?

We don't want costs to be a barrier so we have aquired some bursary funding - please contact lucy@playingout.net if you need to access this - we can buy train tickets and hotel room for you if that's helpful.

What are my transport options for getting to and from the event?

The Southville Centre is a 20-25 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads train station, or you can get the bus - the A1 Airport flyer (final destination Bristol airport) runs every 10-15mins from Temple Meads to Wapping Wharf, then it's a 9 minute walk from there to the Southville Centre. There is also pay and display parking right outside the building.

If I'm coming the night before, where could I stay in Bristol?

Avonside Guest House is friendly and family run. It's basic but clean and comfortable, and only 7 minutes walk from the venue. They have single rooms from £40 or twin rooms from £50.

Ibis hotel near Bristol Temple Meads has very reasonably priced rooms - roughly £50 for a double or twin room.

Airbnb usually has some good cheap rooms - make sure to check the reviews!

The YHA in Bristol is lovely, but already very booked up - if you don't mind sleeping in a dorm room there might be some beds left!

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please contact lucy@playingout.net or 0117 953 7167 with any questions.
