A practical and entertaining insight into how scripts are adapted and presented to a modern, English-speaking theatre audience.

About this event

This Masterclass will provide a practical and entertaining insight into how foreign scripts are adapted and presented to a modern, English-speaking theatre audience. How does a translator capture the tone of an author and the peculiarities of another language? Can humour be deployed in the same manner? And how on earth are idioms and culture-specific jokes rendered in translation?

Using examples from literature, theatre and film, we will explore how best to engage an English audience with a translated script, and look at a hands-on approach to how we get from a 'literal' translation to a finished, audience-ready product.

Daniel Millar is an actor and playwright who has translated and adapted Intrigue/Love, Mary Stuart, Fiesco, The Robbers and Joan of Arc, all with Mark Leipacher as part of The Faction Theatre Company’s Complete Works of Schiller.

He trained at LAMDA and can currently be seen in Measure for Measure at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse; previous theatre credits include: The Play That Goes Wrong (West End); King Lear, Edward II, Frankenstein, The White Guard and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (National Theatre); The Winter’s Tale (RSC); There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (Manchester Royal Exchange); Return to Elm House (BAC); The Grift (Town Hall Hotel, London), Prom Kween (Underbelly, Edinburgh International Festival); The Oresteia (Home Manchester); Against Captain’s Orders, The Drowned Man, The Crash of the Elysium, The Night Chauffeur and The Black Diamond (Punchdrunk); Stink Foot (The Yard Theatre); Accomplice (Menier Chocolate Factory); Goosebumps Alive (The Vaults); Richard III, Twelfth Night and Intrigue/Love (The Faction); Ker-Ching (Frantic Assembly); Romeo and Juliet (Battersea Arts Centre); The Unspeakable (ETT); Sorted (Theatre 503); Black Poppies and The Pig (National Theatre Studio workshops).

Television includes: Britannia and Trying Again (Sky); London Kills (Acorn TV); Warren, Psychoville, Doctors, Eastenders, Holby City, Grownups, and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Doctors (BBC); Vincent, Instinct and Beautiful Day (ITV).
