"Inhabiting sound"

Sound is a vibration and when that vibration goes out into the world it affects those it touches. We often write because it sounds right without considering why. This workshop aims to take a playful look at sound and how to bring consciousness of sound to add a subtle, or not so subtle, additional power to our writing.

During the workshop we will be using our voices and bodies to explore sound. The workshop will be in two halves focussing on the following elements.

Sound in the self - warming the voice and throat, humming and toning.

Sound shapes - vowels and consonants.

Sound energy – words beyond meaning, paralanguage and spontaneous sounds

Sound and emotion – exploring emotion through sound

The shape of the workshop will evolve on the day aiming for a 2 hour session. These practises will move energies, so participants are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing, bring refreshments and listen to their own needs throughout.

Artist Bio: K Rowan is a free- range artist, writer and performer, living and working in the Tees Valley. K seeks the threads of spiritual and philosophical enquiry through sound and movement. In her writing she celebrates the ordinary and the extraordinary, the individual and the universal, exploring narrative and conversation. K can often be found at TWOOMPH and other poetry events in the North East. She is a member of Tees Women Poets, The Tees Valley Freelancer Network and has worked with Periplum CIC and Between the Tides Festival. She has been published by Ver Poets amongst others and can usually be found hanging around and making a nuisance of herself somewhere on the edges of Teesside and the North Yorkshire Moors, between the city and the sea. The kettle’s always on. Come in and take the weight off.
