Playwriting: Writing Dialogue for the Stage (2 days)

Two day weekend workshop: 10.00 - 16.00 Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 April 2019

This weekend workshop focuses on the important skill of writing dialogue for stage drama.

We will explore:

1. How does stage dialogue differ from real life dialogue?
2. How does stage dialogue differ from TV or Prose dialogue
3. How to find character’s voice through character development
4. Handling two person dialogue
5. Handling three person dialogue
6. What is subtext and how to use it?

This practical workshop will use discussions and writing exercises to get students practicing the skills presented.

No previous writing experience required but students should be happy to work on dialogue exercises in class.

​TUTOR: Caroline Dunford is an internationally produced playwright based in Scotland. She has written in a wide variety of genres from light drama to supernatural horror. She was Siege Perilous’s Writer in Resident and mentor for their new playwrights. Caroline is also a novelist and two of her characters - Euphemia Martins and Daniel Truce have had series of books published. Caroline is a Teaching Fellow at Edinburgh University, an advocate for mental health and pro-disability rights. She has a background in journalism, psychology and psychotherapy and is currently co-chair of The Society of Authors in Scotland.
