Description

Speakers:

Dr Joseph Featherstone (Emeritus Professor of Education, Michigan State University)

Dr Emily Harper (Teacher at Lyndhurst Primary School, Camberwell, London)

Dr Ken Jones (Senior Policy Officer NUT & Emeritus Professor, Goldsmiths)

2017 is the 50th year since the publication of ‘Children and their Primary Schools’, better known as The Plowden Report. Plowden has been a consistent reference point since that time and has come to stand for child-centred, socially conscious primary education. It prompted an international interest and educators from across the world visited English primary schools – notably in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Leicestershire. Our conference invites teachers and others concerned with primary education to recall Plowden and ask what we have learned since and what we have forgotten.

The Plowden controversies about methods of teaching and the arguments of academics, politicians and journalists will be acknowledged but we want to draw particularly on the experiences of teachers and pupils during the 1960s and subsequent decades, including the very different experiences of our present time.

This event is part of the ‘Sir Alec Clegg Revisited’ project based at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge, funded by a University of Cambridge Arts & Humanities Research Grant. See https://alecclegg.com/ The History of Education Society UK has also funded this event.

Alec Clegg was the Chief Education Officer of the West Riding 1945–1974 and a witness to the Plowden Committee. In that role he was vocal in his defence of teachers discussing with philosophers R S Peters and A J Ayer and progressive teachers and writers such as Edward Blishen.

Attendance is free of charge but prior registration is essential. Please use Eventbrite. There will be a ‘pop-up’ exhibition for the duration of the event – remembering Plowden with a range of photographs and educational books dating from dating 1960s and 1970s.
