Join the Al- Khoei Foundation to hear about experience from its Iraq and UK programmes on taking a pluralistic and inclusive approach to building community relations, improve harmony and address stereotypes and misconceptions between diverse communities.
There will also be presentations on two collaborations with the Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID): 1) working with marginalised communities in Pakistan, strengthening their resilience and amplifying their voices; 2) establishing a pluralistic religious curriculum which changed perspectives in Iraqi schools on religious diversity.
Speakers
- Lord Glasman
Maurice Glasman is a Labour life peer in the House of Lords and director of the Common Good Foundation. He is also Professor of Politics at St Mary’s University. Prior to becoming a peer, Baron Glasman worked for ten years for London Citizens on their Living Wage campaign.
- Ms Aliya Azam, MBE
Secondary Head of Science in Al Sadiq School and Al Zahra School for twenty-nine years. Responsibilities include representing the Al Khoei Foundation at the Religious Education Council of England and Wales (REC) as well as organising inter-faith projects and community cohesion. Board and Trustee of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales since 2012 to 2021. Trustee of Al Ayn Social Care Foundation UK since 2006. Muslim representative of the ‘Faith and Football’ program organised by the Football Association. Trustee of the Christian Muslim Forum (CMF) from March 2020. Honoured with an MBE for community cohesion with the Al Khoei Foundation in 2015.
- Mr Joseph Briefel
Joseph Briefel is Programmes Manager at Integrity UK, working on peace-building, civil society, and strategic communications initiatives in the MENA Region, with a strong focus on Iraq.
- Ms Thana AlBassam
Thana AlBassam is a programme lead in Iraq for Al-Khoei's work with CREID on religious curriculum.
- Jaffer A Mirza
Jaffer is a researcher focusing to Freedom of Religion and Belief with a particular interest on extremism, terrorism, Pakistan and the Middle East. Before joining the Al-Khoei, Jaffer worked for a number of different NGOs and INGOs and think tanks the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs. Jaffer is the author of four research papers, a training manual for countering extremism and for analysis for media outlets.
