This year we have teamed up with Sir Harrison Birtwistle to curate our most ambitious and exciting programme to date. The fantastic group of artists visiting Plush in the summer will participate in events encompassing a wide range of music, from the earliest polyphonic composers through the classical canon to modern jazz and a select group of Harry’s works.

We welcome back Sir Andras Schiff for this year’s solo piano recital, featuring a composer he has championed like no other. Bach is a central theme this year, and his great and enigmatic ‘Musical Offering’ will be performed by the Plush Ensemble and directed by Jonathan Cohen in September.

Mark Padmore joins us with Andrew West for an evening featuring late Schubert songs and a recently completed Birtwistle song cycle. One of Harry’s particular wishes was to include the strange and amazing motets of Machaut with Medieval Organum plainchant music. This can be heard in July with world famous choir Gothic Voices and our own plainchant arrangements for saxophone quartet and cello.

Our two ‘Insights’ events offer a unique chance to discover how music is conceived, before hearing the piece performed. Harry will be in discussion with Michael Berkeley, a great composer in his own right and previously director of the Cheltenham Festival. This will unfold on our Festival Day which features an open rehearsal, film screening, and three events full of exciting new music and masterpieces, with an ensemble including Tim Horton, Lawrence Power and Corey Cerovsek.

Continuing our celebration of jazz pianists, Kit Downes joins us this year with saxophonist Hayden Chisholm, who appeared so memorably in Plush with the late John Taylor. John was universally loved and admired and this concert is in his memory. Our Emerging Artist concert concludes the festival with two inspiring young musicians at the forefront of the evening.
