This course is designed to introduce the beginner to the basic elements of drawing and painting, exploring the use of different materials and methods, techniques and mark making, to include charcoal, pencils, ink, and acrylic paint As we move through the course , you will experiment with the basic principles of colour and composition to make abstract drawings and paintings using shape, line and form. Students will also explore drawing and painting simple, still life life compositions, using objects and/or photographs which you may bring to the studio. You will be introduced to drawing as an observational study for painting as well as a means of ideas generation and development. The sessions will involve group discussion and ideas generation in a climate of mutual support and respect.

Course Content

Week 1

What is drawing?(as a visual language) Introduction to different materials - different papers/surfaces/pencils/charcoal.

Week 2

Mark making - Introducing line, form and texture - exercises drawing to sound to elicit different marks.

Week 3

Tonal Drawing - creating form using charcoal and pencils of different grades.

Week 4

Students bring in an object(s)/photograph/inspiration from home (not a portrait or landscape) Drawing using tone.

Week 5

Colour - Introduction to the colour wheel using acrylic paint

Week 6

Monochrome Painting. Painting using one colour and three tones.

Week 7

Painting using three colours and three tones only.

Week 8

Drawing into Painting.

Week 9

Drawing/Painting with ink.

Week 10

Free session using materials and methods of choice.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience required.

Materials and Equipment

Materials for this course are included in the course fee. Please wear old clothes/an overall and strong, flat, closed-toe footwear.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
