Event description


This course will teach you how to work safely with glass directly from a furnace. Over the ten weeks you will learn how to use the appropriate equipment and techniques to enable you to sculpt and blow hot glass forms.

Course Content

Week 1

Introduction to workshop, machinery, equipment and tools. Health and Safety issues.

Week 2

Gathering molten glass from the furnace. Make a colourless, solid glass form.

Week 3

Introduction to colour powder and frit. Make a colour paper weight form.

Week 4

Repeat weeks 2 and 3. Practice time to gain confidence with materials, techniques and tools.

Week 5

Blow and cap. Learn the technique of trapping air into the blowing pipe to create a small blown form.

Week 6

Blow and cap – Practice time.

Week 7

Tool techniques and transfer work.

Week 8

Punty and Transfer work. Creating vessels.

Week 9

Opening necks for vessels – make a drinking glass.

Week 10

Individual Student Choice. Tutor support.

Entry Requirements


Materials and Equipment

Materials for this course are included in the course fee. It is a hot studio and you will get hot so please dress accordingly - cotton tops are advisable. Trousers – linen, cotton, jeans and work boots are required. Hair must be tied back. Please bring a pen and notebook to each session.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
