Event description


By the end of the course you will develop basic skills and knowledge in flat pattern manipulation and garment production methods through a planned range of practical samples. Developing key elements of manipulation (darts, panel seams, gathers, flare). You will produce a technical folder to collate skills and knowledge gained during the Course.

Course Content

Week 1

Understand the basic bodice block and its relationship to the mannequin and the female form (2 dimensional shape into 3 dimensional shape). Understand the 5 key elements to basic flat pattern manipulation. Darts, panels, gathers, tucks, flare. Understand the principle and application of dart manipulation using the slash and fold technique.

Week 2

Continue to develop their understanding of block manipulation through slash and open techniques to create additional fullness or gathers and create flare.

Be introduced to and understand dart and bodice developments: manipulation of darts into seams, creating yoke seams and manipulating darts into gathers to create fullness

Week 3

Induction on industrial flat machine and pressing equipment. Understand threading flat machine, machine control exercises, straight sewing onto calico. Use of back tack and seam guide. Introduction to overlockers and pressing equipment. Seam development - open seam, closed seam.

Week 4

Understand the development of pattern skills during the ½ toile project. You will cover setting up pattern draft, amending neckline and armhole, creating button and buttonhole opening, creating facings with fusing reinforcement and self-bias strip neatening.

Week 5

Continue with draft ½ toile project. Trace off pattern pieces and add seam allowances.

Week 6

Continue with ½ toile project. Cut ½ toile pattern in calico. Understand the positioning of grain lines. Know how to reinforce front facings with fusible interlining.

Week 7

Continue with ½ toile project. Understand elements of garment construction. Discuss method of construction. Fabric manipulation and seam construction. Application of facings, self-bias strip and fastenings.

Week 8

Commence construction of ½ toile project.

Week 9

Continuation of ½ toile project.

Week 10

Complete ½ toile project. Recap on skills.

Entry Requirements

None, although basic sewing experience would be an advantage.

Materials and Equipment

Demonstration or materials for experimentation will be provided free of charge but you may be required to purchase your own materials in order to complete your personal creative projects. You will need to bring pencils (preferably a technical pencil), ruler or Patternmaster, eraser, scissors (paper and fabric), dressmaking pins, tape measure, masking tape, Pritt Stick, coloured fineliner pens, highlighter pens and A4 folder for handouts. Students may find it useful to bring an A3 or A2 portfolio case in which to put their pattern pieces, to keep them flat. Pattern Masters are around £15 and technical pencils £2- £5 - both are available from the College Shop. Calico is around £1.80/m, available from your Pattern Cutting tutor.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
