Description

In this experimental 10 week course you will learn advanced printed textile design and surface pattern techniques and will develop upon the basic knowledge gained from the beginner course. You will be encouraged to design and develop a personal collection of designs on fabric and on paper using a variety of processes. Course Content


Week 1

Introduction to tutors and the aim of the course.

Design technique

Drawing exercises


Week 2

Practical technique - Intro to discharge printing, testing different percentages on different cloths using paper stencils

Design technique - A more in depth look at complex repeat patterns, use of jog lines, geometrics, florals, illustration, registration.

Drawing in sketchbooks, working on a design ready for photo stenciling including registration, marks.


Weeks 3

Photo stencil a screen with repeat design


Week 4

Screen printing with pigments (water based)


Week 5

Practical technique - Introduction to printing on wool or silk with acid/reactive dyes

Continue screen printing


Week 6

Design technique - Introducing a second colour, colour separation

Creating the artwork for a second colour


Week 7

Photo stenciling second screen

Continue screen printing


Week 8

Personal Project Time

Entry Requirements

Completion of the Beginners Short Course or equivalent textiles printing experience.

Materials and Equipment

Demonstration or materials for experimentation will be provided free of charge but you may be required to purchase your own materials in order to complete your personal creative projects. Please wear old clothes/an overall or apron and strong, flat, closed-toe footwear. You should bring drawing tools, a sketchbook or notepad, rubber gloves and an apron.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
