Plymouth College of Art - 5 Week Hat Making for Beginners and Improvers

Making hats is an exciting and highly imaginative craft, with endless possibilities for creative flair and innovative design. If you are a beginner, stitches and techniques will be clearly explained. All templates, basic materials and handouts are supplied for each project.

Essential skills of millinery, including stitching, shaping and sewing techniques will be demonstrated
Learn to block a felt hat with several styles explained
Make a fascinator or headpiece using different materials such as felt, velvet, sinamay and learn how to stiffen materials, cut on the bias, apply millinery wire and make a base
Use the cut and sew method to make a pattern for a modern beret or cap in tweed. Other materials can be used such as corduroy, leather or velvet
Finish the course by making a variety of trims using all the materials covered on the course which can then be applied to any of your creations
None. This course is suitable for those who have previously attended a hat making course with Penny, or have some basic hat making experience.
Materials and Equipment
Materials for the course are included within the course fee. All equipment and materials will be provided. If you wish to supplement materials to complete a personal project, your tutor can advise of suitable suppliers.
Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
