You will experience the unique hands-on process of assembling moveable type and printing your work on a letterpress printing press. Create your own business card, a greetings card or a poster using a process that is centuries old.

Week 1 - Introduction to typesetting with moveable type; understanding the basics of the letterpress process—measurement, equipment, and the composing room.
Week 2 - Basic typesetting with moveable type—constructing simple sentences and then phrases and making ready for basic printing.
Week 3 - Advanced typesetting on larger projects such as posters and broadsheets.
Week 4 - Introduction to the printing presses—using a hand-powered Adana or Columbian press or an automatic FAG Control 45 to print your work.
Week 5 - Setting and printing a final project of your choice.
Materials and Equipment
All tools and materials are provided. No prior experience is required. For workshop based sessions please wear work clothing and closed toed shoes.
Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
