5 week Life Drawing for Improvers

This course will allow you to develop your figurative drawing skills, based on the close observation of the human form while also experimenting with different mediums and mark-making techniques. You will learn the use of a range of traditional/academic, as well as contemporary/experimental methods & techniques.

Week 1

Rapid, Gesture, Sequence and Moving Poses - please bring in Lots of paper as we will be working from multiple poses during this session, charcoal, drawing ink and brushes (half inch wash brush and a No 6 round watercolour-type brush), biro, pencil or graphite stick.


Week 2

Tonal painting/drawing. Working in either charcoal and white chalk on mid tone paper or black and white acrylic paint on board or canvass. Bring in paper for preparatory sketches and develop skills in composition and modelling form and volume.


Week 3

Colour. Using either chalk pastel or acryic paint, develop your drawing/painting technique from the life model using colour. Bring paper for preparatory sketches.


Week 4

Experimental Techniques. Working on a large scale from the life model, bring in a roll of wallpaper lining paper, charcoal, brushes and ink, masking tape.


Week 5

Portraiture. Understanding the anatomy of the head, proportion and techniques to develop and refine the portrait. Bring in charcoal, white chalk, a putty rubber and 3 sheet of mid toned paper.

Entry Requirements

You will have completed beginner level life drawing Short Course or had equivalent experience. This course is for people who feel confident with the basic principles and techniques of life drawing or who may have done a lot of life drawing previously but have had a break, and now require a refresher.

Equipment and Materials

You will be required to purchase your own materials. Please bring lots of paper and quick mediums such as charcoal, biro, felt pens, ink and a brush to your first session.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
