Plymouth College of Art - 5 week Pattern Cutting for Improvers (Jan 2017)
Tue, 10 Jan 2017, 17:30 – Tue, 7 Feb 2017, 21:00 GMT
By the end of the course you will develop the basic skills learnt in the beginner’s pattern cutting classes and knowledge in flat pattern manipulation and garment production methods to make your own basic skirt draft. Developing key elements of manipulation (darts, panel seams, gathers, flare), you will then produce a simple skirt made to fit your measurements.
Location: Plymouth College of Art, Tavistock Place
Start Time: 18:00
End Time: 21:00
Start Date: 10/01/17
End Date: 07/02/17
Bring a simple skirt design (sketch or image from a magazine or computer).
Measure each other to obtain the sizes we need to draft the skirt pattern.
Draft a basic skirt pattern to your measurements.
Continue with basic skirt pattern.
Cut in calico.
Industrial machine induction.
Make calico toile of skirt on the industrial machines.
Try the calico toile on and pin to fit.
Amend the pattern accordingly.
Looking at the skirt design now manipulate the basic pattern draft to create the skirt design required.
Continue with pattern amendments adding seam allowances, grainlines etc.
Cut the new pattern in the student’s fabric.
Start to sew the skirt using industrial techniques. Demonstrations of seam finishes, zip and waistband application will be given.
Basic sewing experience and beginners pattern cutting would be an advantage.
Materials and Equipment
Demonstration or materials for experimentation and 1 metre of calico will be provided free of charge but you will be required to purchase your own fabric in order to complete your personal skirt design. You will need to bring pencils (preferably a technical pencil), ruler or Patternmaster, eraser, scissors (paper and fabric), dressmaking pins, tape measure, masking tape, coloured fine liner pens, highlighter pens and A4 folder for handouts.
Calico is around £1.80/m, available from your Pattern Cutting tutor if more than 1 metre is required.
