Plymouth College of Art - 5 Week Willow Weaving for Beginners

Learn to make simple round baskets, mini sculptures or garden plant supports in Willow.
At the end of the course you will have a good basic knowledge of Willow types and how to prepare them, weaving tools and how to use them and the stages in constructing a stake and strand round bottom basket. You will have used a selection of the hundreds of weaves available and you will have completed at least 3 different items.

Week 1 - After a brief talk about tools and how to use them we will make 2 round bottom bases. The best we will keep for our first project (a breadbasket) the others we will make into flowers. I will ask each student which direction they would like to take. Stake and strand baskets, frame baskets or small items such as bird feeders and dragonflies or plant supports or a combination.
Week 2 - Basket makers will stake up the basket and weave the upset then make a base for their 2 nd basket (a waste paper basket).
Week 3 - Basket Makers will stake up and weave the upset on basket 2 and then the sides of both baskets.
Week 4 - Basket Makers finish the sides with a 3 rod wale and will border both baskets.
Week 5 - Basket Makers will finish any outstanding items on the first 2 baskets and the make a stick platter.
Two good hands that can grip and work well.
Materials and Equipment
Please bring an apron, notebook and pen and if you have it, a camera or smartphone. Materials are included.
Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
