About this Event

As part of our LGBT+ History month we are delighted to welcome Dr Alan Butler for a talk on Plymouth's Hidden LGBT History, exploring the rich life and histories from the Plymouth LGBT communities past and present.

Dr Butler directs Plymouth Pride and also created Plymouth’s LGBT community archive and exhibition as part of his Phd studies with Plymouth University. His PhD study, entitled “Performing LGBT Pride in Plymouth 1950–2012” arose as a direct result of the formation of this LGBT community archive, which also currently informs a dedicated accession within the city’s archives, comprising of oral history interviews and memorabilia pertaining to the performance of LGBT identity in the city over a sixty year period.

This archive was named the Community and Heritage Group’s Most Inspirational Archive of 2011. He continues this work as a Research Fellow and lecturer at Plymouth University.

This event will take place in Lecture Theater Two of the Roland Levinsky Building with refreshments before and after the talk with the actual talk starting at 18:00.
