Keynote Presentations

The Power of Student-Led Social Enterprise

The Edinburgh Enactus team is a student society of 83 members; they run eight life changing social enterprises locally and internationally, to meet the needs of communities with entrepreneurial spirit and innovations developed at the University of Edinburgh.

Delivering Projects – through, with and by people

The one constant in a VUCA world is people. People and relationships are at the heart of any project, any context and any system. But just as the world we operate in is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, so too are people!

Whether you are delegating project tasks to key personnel (resources), keeping stakeholders updated or managing the expectations and outputs of everyone involved, it is critical that your communication and people management skills are evolving so that you get the best out of each person and reduce the impact of operating in an uncertain environment.

In the Future Work Skills 2020 report, the Institute for the Future (IFTF) lists Social Intelligence, Cross-Cultural Competency and Virtual Collaboration in the top 10 skills, abilities and competencies that will be required to operate effectively in this increasingly VUCA world.

Whether you drive your projects based on tasks or relationships, chances are there will be someone on the project team that you frustrate, or that frustrates you. You’re both complex creatures, with the ability to reason, yet you may as well be talking different languages.

In this session, Business Coach, Speaker & ex-Project Manager Sam Forsberg shares a model that will help you understand your own style of communication preferences, decision making and style-under-stress. You’ll also learn how your style impacts others, and how to identify others’ style preferences so that you can adapt your behaviour to more effectively communicate with, engage and influence them and the successful delivery of your projects.

Dundee Waterfront Project

In 1998, Dundee City Council started the process that has led to the full redevelopment of the Dundee Waterfront. The most obvious aspect of this is the iconic V&A building, but the project stretches the full length of the waterfront from the harbour in the East to the Railway Bridge in the North. Allan Watt, the Dundee Waterfront Project Co-ordinator, will give us his insider view of the project’s past, present and future.

Speakers

Sam Fosberg

With a B of Info Sci, Sam Forsberg started her career as a business analyst and project manager for HP in Australia, before being seduced by the £’s in London. Working across a range of sectors, countries and projects, Sam opted for a career change 7 years later after losing her voice for >3 months because you just can’t run projects relying on scribbled hand-written notes!

As a business coach, Sam works with business owners and their teams, helping them to be more effective at everything they do – improving profitability, productivity and people-management.

As a speaker and trainer, Sam delivers highly engaging talks, seminars and workshops that entertain as they educate – ensuring delegates walk away with insights and tools that they can remember and start using straight away.

Allan Watt

Allan is a proud Dundonian who started his career as a Town Planning Technician with the City of Dundee District. After gaining an Honours Degree in Town and Regional Planning at Heriot-Watt University, Allan moved through a number of posts with Tayside Region, Scottish National Heritage and the University of Dundee, finally landing at Scottish Enterprise, where he helped to secure £33m of investment for the Dundee Waterfront Project. He is now the Dundee Waterfront Project Director for Dundee City Council.
