Description
Welcome to P.M.T (Powering the Matriarchy Together)
- a small but mighty celebration of womxn and non binary people in Birmingham. Our fierce cats at PMT HQ are back for a second year, bringing you playful and mind tingling sessions covering themes of love, art, body and work.
Come along to connect with some of the city’s brightest minds, inspiring performers and crafty cats who’ll leave you with plenty of things to make, marvel at and explore. We’re also very proud to announce the addition of a PMT Zine Library, curated by our very own homegrown Illustrated Brum.
Workshops
11.00-11.30: Weaving Your Identity | Nilupa Yasmin
Our first session holder is artist Nilupa Yasmin. Come along to join Nilupa in a weaving circle like no other and hear her talk about her work which is rooted in notions of culture, self-identity and anthropology.
12.15-12.45: Boxer Bab | Miriam Zouzhou
Do you know you don’t need to be big and strong to throw a punch? Come and join England boxing champ and rising star Miriam Zouzhou as she shares her journey into boxing. You’ll even get a chance to do a few moves as she guides you through a couple of her favourite moves. Please wear comfy clothing for this session and be prepared to express some rage!
13.45-14.15: Taking Action, Taking Care: Self Love & How to Practice It | Louise Latter
Join Louise as she shares her experiences of CFT (compassion-focused therapy) and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) with a session to take you through her top tips to develop self love including an activity which is simple, silent and does not include anything embarrassing! The aim is to equip you with some tools to develop your own self love and information to signpost you to further resources.
Performances
11.45- 12.00: Demi Nandhra
Demi Nandhra is an interdisciplinary artist from Birmingham who makes solo performance, live art, theatre and sociopolitical enquiries. Her work explores Mental Health through examining collective sadness, vulnerability and cultural binaries. Her work is performed in theatres, galleries and beds.
13.15-13.30: Nafeesa Hamid
Nafeesa Hamid is a British Pakistani spoken word poet and playwright based in Birmingham. Her work covers taboo themes such as sex, domestic violence and mental health. She has featured at Outspoken (London), Poetry is Dead Good (Nottingham), Find the Right Words (Leicester) and Hit The Ode (Birmingham). Join Nafeesa as she shares extracts from her new work 'Being a Woman'
14.20-14.35: Liz Ord
Liz Ord is a performer, artist, model and photographer who mimics but mocks situations. Their work grazes close to the situations they find problematic but extenuated, inflated rendered a little unhinged. Join them as they share their performative self care piece “Are You Thirsty” The work will be audio and visual with performative elements which are mostly soundscape and spoken word. The character is based on the need to take care of yourself though brand endorsement, or the way brands monopolise our obsession with bettering ourselves.

We'll be celebrating IWD with interactive and informative ways to get you feeling empowered with greater knowledge of badass women, why we celebrate IWD and why we even have to have one. Think of it as an alternative HERstory.
Girls Who Grind Coffee - As well as the lovely Girl Dreamer coffee shop take over we have a special guest roast available from the duo of female baristas at Girls Who Grind Coffee. Check out more about their range of female powered brews here.
12.45-13.15: Buff buffet with Cakes & Ish - Cakes & Ish create 100% vegan baked goods such as cakes and Jamaican patties. Everything they make is totally free from wheat and soy. All we ask for is a little contribution to the lovely grub. You’ll also find some vegan cakes in the space during the day.
All day: Stay and Play | Bringing you bubs along to PMT. We’ve got a little space for you here to help keep those little ones entertained. (Please note children should not be left unaccompanied).

*Womxn is spelling of women that is a more inclusive, progressive term that not only sheds light on the prejudice, discrimination, and institutional barriers womxn have faced, but to also show that womxn are not the extension of men but their own free and separate entities. It is considered more intersectional than womyn because it actively includes trans-women and women of colour.
