Pod No. 1 (beginners) 5-week short story course

[There will only be 6 places in a Pod. Regular creative writing classes consist of between 10 – 15 people. A 6-person pod ensures you will each receive closer attention to the details of your work. Each session will last for approx. 2 hours + there will be a very short piece of homework, designed to ensure that you’re progressing nicely throughout the course. By the end of the 5th week you will have produced a final edit of a short story you’ve been working on and have the opportunity to publish it on the New Machine’s website]

Week 1 - Point of view

We will be looking here at the relationship between the reader and the narrator. You will learn what it means to write in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person (+ variations). I will introduce you to some the textual nuances that authors deploy within these narrative modes. You’ll then have an opportunity to explore this yourself, in writing.

In this session we will be looking at excerpts from: Brett Easton Ellis, Chimamanda Ngoze Adichie, Elizabeth Gaskell and JM Coetzee.

Week 2 - Style/tone and dialogue

In the second week, we will examine three different narrative styles. You will have an opportunity to emulate these in a writing exercise. We will then discuss dialogue and explore this using a free writing technique. In this session we will be looking at excerpts from: Charles Dickens, Katherine Mansfield and Albert Camus.

Week 3 – Character development and plot

This session will help you generate ideas for characters and plot. You will be begin to see your own short story emerging.

The homework will be to write a 2000/3000-word short story based on everything you’ve learned so far.

Week 4 - How to critique

We will look at a short story here together and learn how to critique it in terms of its themes, its character development(s), its style/type of narration, its plot and structure, its dialogue, etc. You will learn to distinguish what you think is effective and what needs work in other peoples’ writing (this will in turn inform your own writing and allow you to proceed with more clarity).

Week 5 - Feedback

Here you will receive a compassionate critique of your work, and will partake in a discussion of other peoples’ work (+ you will have an opportunity to take your story away with you, produce a final edit, and publish it on The New Machine’s website).
