Event description

Description

Why does it seem like everyone has a podcast these days?

Maybe it's because podcasting is a medium that holds so much potential for journalists and others in the media industry to tell their stories in their own way, follow their passions, connect with their communities and expand their audiences. This course is a great opportunity for you to develop your digital skills, at a price and in a location you won't find anywhere else.

  • What is a podcast?

  • Where are podcasts published?

  • How do podcasters fund their work?

  • How are podcasts created?

  • How are podcasts marketed?

  • How can mobile devices and apps make podcasting simple?

Our all-new workshop will answer these questions and more, and plunge you to the virbrant world of podcasting.

We'll talk about what makes a podcast different to traditional radio, show you some of the light-weight kit and software that you can use to make a professional-sounding pod, and demonstrate how apps on your tablet and smartphone now mean starting your own show is only a few clicks away. You'll also get some top tips on creating a podcast logo and brand from scratch.

By the end of the workshop you will have produced your very own podcast using the nifty Anchor app (download it now on Apple iOS or Android). So it's vital that you Bring Your Own Device - an Apple or Android smarthphone or tablet and your adaptors - with you and have the Anchor app installed before you arrive.

Your tutors will be Steve Johnson, Community Radio tutor at the University of South Wales in Cardiff and Richard Speight, the NUJ Training Wales Project Manager and freelance digital skills tutor. They're both passionate about podcasts, both as listeners and as producers. Steve hosts the Creatrium podcast profiling some of the amazing talent working at USW's Atrium building in Cardiff and Richard is in the process of launching a new podcast, Mackem Exiles, which aims to tell the stories of Sunderland football fans around the world.

The event will also see the launch of the new NUJ Training Wales podcast, with everyone who attends receiving an exclusive early release of our very first episode which will feature Steve and Richard discussing our favourite journalistic podcasts from Wales and beyond.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to develop your skills and network with other people in the media industry - book now!
