Using Poems as Templates to Facilitate your own Writing

About this event

We often encounter writers who are adamant that they do not read poetry or other writers as they do not want to contaminate their own work. Malika is always saddened by this as reading other writers is an essential part of any writer’s creative process. We will interrogate several poems forensically in order to isolate some of the writer’s techniques and strategies. We will then use these as stimulus to kick start our own work.

You will be sent the poems prior to the session so that you are familiar with the work but treat this as a laboratory where we explore and experiment as a learning process, where failure is smiled upon as it is a necessary ingredient for these experiments, where our success is measured in what you learnt during the process.

You should leave the session with a few drafts that you can develop afterwards. You will need paper, pen, computer, or tablet (whatever your writing preference) as well as some sort of beverage (tea, coffee, water) and any snacks (biscuits, crisps) to sustain yourself throughout.
