Anthony Anaxagorou is renowned for the sensitivity and intelligence of his work. The winner of the London Mayor's Poetry Slam produced If I Told You in the June of 2011: A probing piece of poetry intended to explore the rich history of Africa, as well as our misconceptions about it. He has made a number of Television and Radio appearances; this included a feature on BBC Youth Nation where he performed poems that examined many of the social issues faced by youth today. A native of north London, Anthony wrote his first short stories and poems at the age of 14. He has since devoted himself to telling his listeners about how society and politics influence us. His references to facts and figures are blended with his belief in the power of Love as essential for life.
Originally a Somali-born refugee from Tanzania, Azfa Awad is an enormously gifted performance and page poet who, this year, won the prestigious national Tower Poetry Prize for her poem, ‘Origins’, and was also awarded a fellowship working with children and writing spoken word poems on child migration for Apples and Snakes, the UK’s leading performance poetry organisation. Azfa is currently Oxford’s Youth Ambassador for Poetry (2013-14), and was Poet in Residence for the city’s Christmas Light Festival in 2013.
Martin Powell’s sharp wits and compassion have earned him wide acclaim. Featured in the CNN + YouTube Debate on Climate Change, his poem ‘Global Warming’ was broadcast from the United Nations Climate Change Summit of 2009. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, also featured a performance by him. Martin’s devotion to human rights, social issues, and the environment comes through clearly in his poems. His clever turns of phrase and skilful, rhythmic, delivery distinguish him as a powerful and persuasive poet.

Raising awareness of Human Rights through the Arts.
In 2018 the Oxford Human Rights Film Festival will be celebrating its 16th year. Founded in 2003, the festival is an initiative of post graduate students on the Oxford Brookes MA course in Development and Emergency Practice and now involves students from across the University including Film Studies, Business & Marketing and International Relations.
In attracting diverse audiences to each of our events, the aim of the festival is to raise awareness about a range of human rights concerns among students and the wider Oxford community.
The festival involves a wide variety of events including film, music, performance and art.
