Poetry and Science: The Litmus Project
Date and time
Location
Hartley Library Gallery, Level 4
Description
Postgraduate poets doing creative writing PhDs have worked for three months with scientists, drawing on their research to produce new poems to present at this session. Join Rough Guide travel writer James McConnachie, transport engineer Dr Ben Waterson, and English Professor Peter Middleton to discover how innovative research can link literature and science. Science under the spotlight includes the structure of turbulence, second generation bioethanol applications, a metagenomic approach to change in microbial soil ecology, binding proteins to surfaces using Quantum Mechanics, the expected useful life of the RNLI’s Severn class lifeboat, the environmental sustainability of rail travel and lightweight lead acid batteries for hybrid vehicles.
The work will be exhibited in the gallery on Level 4, Hartley Library until March 22nd and in buildings throughout the university after that. All welcome.
Please be aware that filming and photography will be carried out throughout the Multidisciplinary Research Week. If you would like to object to being filmed or photographed throughout the event, then please contact multidisciplinary@soton.ac.uk.
