Feature reader, Jaya Savige: An Australian living in London, Jaya will from his fabulous third poetry collection Change Machine (UQP, 2020) which John Kinsella says is ‘one of the finest volumes to come out of Australia in two decades'. His poetry is full of invention, wit, lexical wizardry, rich imagery and depth, reaching from the personal to the political.
His first collection Latecomers (UQP 2005), won the NSW Premier’s Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry and the Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize, was highly commended for the Dame Mary Gilmore Prize. His second book, Surface to Air (UQP 2011), was shortlisted for The Age Poetry Book of the Year and the West Australian Premier’s Prize.
Jaya is Head of Creative Writing at the New College of the Humanities (part of the Northeastern University) and read for a PhD from the University of Cambridge on James Joyce. He is poetry editor for The Australian newspaper.
