Poetry is best when shared, and we want that to be the heart of these evenings: a regular hour each month to offer the chance to read aloud a poem that you may have brought along. On arrival there will be time to browse the shop, grab a hot drink and say hello. From there, we will migrate upstairs and begin by reading the poem chosen by the HB team. There’s no need for analysis or explanation, and there’s no right answer: just time for everyone to take their turn to read, and maybe a bit of room for chat as we go. Whether you want to bring a humorous poem or a meta-poetic riddle is up to you. All we ask is that the poems are kept to a reasonable length. We don’t mind if you’re a fan of Paradise Lost length epics, but an extract might be better on this occasion. Each evening will run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm so that everyone can be home in time for dinner, or for you to meander down to the pub before last orders.
October 9th:
Those that wish should bring along a poem in response to, or that strikes the same chord as ‘October’ by Seán Hewitt. Changing seasons, autumnal landscapes and poems about knitwear encouraged. You’re welcome to stick your head into the shop to grab a printed copy in the run up to Thursday, or keep an eye on our Instagram where we will be posting on theme poems.
