Event description

Description

Explore poetry around the themes of travelling, exile and home with poet Richard Georges. Begin by reading poems about journeys and how a sense of home can be located beyond borders by poets Derek Walcott, Safia Elhillo and Eavan Boland. Spend time writing your own work, focusing on techniques that will loosen your sense of bearing and root yourself in a renewed sense of place. We all have stories to tell if we pay enough attention to the stops along the way.

These poetry workshops are produced in collaboration with Poetry School. Founded in 1997, Poetry School is a national arts organisation providing inspiring tuition and opportunities for poets and poetry audiences.

Richard Georges is a writer, editor and lecturer based on the British Virgin Islands and is the author of two collections of poetry, Make Us All Islands (Shearsman Books, 2017) and Giant (Platypus Press, 2018). He won the Marvin Williams Prize for Caribbean Literature in 2015, and has been shortlisted for several other awards, namely the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, the Hollick Arvon Prize, the Small Axe Literary Prize, and the Wasafiri New Writing Prize. His poems have appeared in Prelude, Smartish Pace, Wasafiri, Baldhip, The Poetry Review, The Rusty Toque, Those That This, Cordite Poetry Review, Barrelhouse and elsewhere.
