Event description

Description

Discover the forgotten story of new arrivals in Victorian London in this guided walk around the former site of Irongate Stairs, just below the Tower of London. The Tower was the point from which Britain’s Jews were expelled in 1290, and it was also the arrival point, in the late nineteenth century, for Jewish immigrants who arrived penniless fleeing persecution and hardship in eastern Europe. Historians Dr Nadia Valman and Dr Lara Atkin from Queen Mary, University of London, in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, Tower of London will tell their story, drawing on new discoveries from the archives about how London was experienced for the first time by those disembarking at Tower Wharf. The walk will be enhanced with atmospheric wall projections of images from the Tower’s archives by projection artist Karen Crosby.
