Freedom of Information

The session is applicable to all staff as we will all at some point be involved in responding to or signing off a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. The session will cover:

An understanding of FOI policy and what is accessible under FOI

  • An overview of the main exemptions applied by DH

  • How to apply the public interest test and the public interest test extension

  • Points to consider when processing a request

  • Case studies of recent requests and when things go wrong

  • An overview of the internal review, Information Commissioner’s Office complaint and tribunal process

  • The role of the FOI team and your role as the information owner

Correspondence

Correspondence is big business across Whitehall, and is an essential part of the democratic process. Letters and emails to ministers are often the first port-of-call for members of the public and health professionals who wish to voice their opinions on departmental policies or current health and social care issues.

The ability to craft an informative and helpful response to correspondence received by the department is something that the Ministerial Correspondence and Public Enquiries Unit has been doing successfully for 10 years and is without doubt one of the core skills that every civil servant should possess.

  • the importance of correspondence – to Ministers, the PM and the public

  • how DH deals with correspondence

  • how the Correspondence Unit works with policy officials

  • how to draft a clear and helpful reply.
