Every year as part of our commercial course, we invite CEFAS to give us the low down on Policy and compliance in aquaculture and food production – and Bio-security and disease control in aquaculture – including case studies. Given that its CEFAS that will be granting you licenses and looking over your biosecurity if you are going to work out of the UK - this is an essential session for any wannabe aquaponicist.
CEFAS (Centre for environment, fisheries and aquaculture science) - essentially the fishy part of DEFRA, is responsible for preventing the introduction and spread of serious diseases in fish, shellfish and crustacea in the UK by:
- managing programmes that monitor the health of fish, shellfish and crustacea
- taking steps to treat and reduce the spread of diseases
- assessing the outbreak, spread and impact of diseases
- investigating unexplained deaths in fish and shellfish
- advising on ways to reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases
This year we are once again joined by Nick Stinton. Nick has been with Cefas for ten years and leads on ornamental fish and has particular experience and expertise on recirculation farming as well as more general forms of aquaculture. He has also spent a fair amount of time looking at issues in Tilapia - an aquaponics go-to species. In 2009 he organised a well-attended conference for the tilapia farming industry highlighting potential disease and husbandry issues the industry should avoid and providing an opportunity for growers to meet the wider aquaculture world. And we love that Nick has loads of experience from prior to his days at the inspectorate. Nick has managed a range of farms from construction of a recirculation trout hatchery to more general trout farming to ornamental recirculation husbandry, managing one of the largest ornamental recirculation farms in the UK. He has worked across the UK and also spent time in Singapore conducting research for the Singaporean government on husbandry of tropical marine food species.
We will run the session as presentations and Q&A
As always we will be keeping the class intimate so that you can ask you project specific questions to Nick and get the most from your time.
