Event description

Description

At the next Policy Lunchbox we will be joined by Professor Louise Archer to discuss engaging young people with science. Places are free but limited so reserve your place.

Louise will draw on findings from two current projects - the Aspires2 longitudinal study and the Enterprising Science research and development project. Both projects seek to understand what shapes young people's science aspirations, engagement and participation. The talk will begin by setting out some of the key factors influencing engagement and participation and outlining how we might conceptualise engagement. Attention is then given to what might be done to broaden and increase engagement and participation, particularly among young people from under-represented communities. The talk will also focus on the outcomes from two years of trialling, in which teachers implemented a 'science capital teaching approach'.

Louise is the Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education at UCL Institute of Education. Her research focuses on educational identities and inequalities, particularly in relation to gender, ethnicity and social class. She is the director of the 10 year Aspires/Aspires2 study, the five year Enterprising Science project and a new four year collaborative project looking at Youth Equity in STEM. She was previously the director of the Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at King's College London and was the coordinator of the ESRC TISME research programme (Targeted Initiative in Science and Mathematics Education).

A free buffet lunch will be served from 12:30 - 13:00, followed by the talk and questions from 13:00 - 14:00.

This event is free and includes a networking lunch. However space is limited and places must be reserved in advance. Due to high demand for Policy Lunchbox events, the number of spaces for individuals in the same organisations will be limited. If the event is full, please sign up to the waiting list to be notified when a space becomes available.

If you are unable to attend the event, we will be live streaming Louise’s presentation. Follow it on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/biochemicalsociety
