About this event

Jersey Marine Conservation (JMC) Pontoon Challenge

You wouldn’t believe how many creatures live in our St Helier marinas. The pontoons are home to numerous animals and plants including the beautiful worm fan, colourful tubes called sea squirts, glass prawns and small wrasse. You may spot a worm pipefish or even a tiny seahorse ( which we know live in the marina). You never know your luck.

Join us and see how many creatures you can spot.

The sessions will be led by a retired teacher and expert marine biologist who will help you with your spotting.

The target is to spot 12 or more creatures and if you reach that total you will be awarded the Jersey Marine Cadet certificate.

Notes for accompanying adults:

The activity is aimed at the 6 – 10 age range in particular. All children must be accompanied by an adult and wear a buoyancy aid while on the pontoons. They can bring their own if they have one but we do have some to lend. It can get very hot on a sunny day but also cold and wet so come prepared.

We will be kneeling and lying down while looking into the water so splinters are a possibility. Some creatures such as anemones can in rare cases cause an allergic reaction. Please do not leave valuables or any items in pockets. JMC cannot take any responsibility for injury, damage, loss of property, getting wet or parents deciding to buy a boat. Wheelchairs and pushchairs can be brought down onto the pontoons but must be handled with care and the ramp can be very steep to negotiate. Domestic animals are not allowed. The area is not open to the general public and is accessed through a security gate. Families must stay with the activity leader at all times. As it is low tide the marina is closed to boat traffic. There are toilet facilities and public parking nearby.

There is no charge for this event but a donation of £5 per child would be gratefully accepted and goes towards our education outgoings.

Please email jerseymarineconservation@gmail.com if you have any specific questions. Thank you.
