Event description

Description

As requested by our members and supporters, September finds us returning to our POP Thursdays with a +. Please join us to discuss our Esme Fairbairn investment (still to be confirmed), a 5-year vision for the future of Plymouth; and ideas for Mayflower 2020.

9:30 Welcome, networking and refreshments.

10:00 The Esme Fairbairn Money. They are offering £1m over 5 years so that the community sector can ‘lead not follow’ in the changes that are happening in society and our city. Before this event funding should be confirmed and signed off, so then we need to be making the best social impact! We want to do this in ways that are entirely democratic and transparent. See what the consultation with the sector has said so far here. This report is from the earlier work in May.

10:30 The Vision. For this we need a vision of the next five years, today’s local event will link to a national debate (https://civilsocietyfutures.org/) around the future of citizenship, but with our own money and our own city as the focus.

11:30 Refreshments Break and Networking

12:00 Towards a Community Manifesto. What do we already know that would make good change happen? What would we like, from our contact with our member groups & beneficiaries, to ask the city council to do? We will spend this hour working on a Community Manifesto to be published in January. Our intention is to influence how the political parties write their manifestos for the city elections in May, linking them to the opinions and voices across the city.

This space could be used by networks or discussion groups as people feel will work on the day.

13:00 Bring and Share Lunch + Open Mic (13:30 start) for updates from members.

14:00 Mayflower for Communities (Public Event)

An open session, with the public invited, to see how Plymouth and its communities can all join in the Mayflower commemoration in 2020. There are already a lot of ideas, with many people already planning events and programmes.

This session will start with an introduction from POP+ (Jacky Clift) and Plymouth Culture (Dom Jinks); leading on to open space discussions. What do we want? Do the things we want link up? Do we want a ‘fringe’ festival? Do they all have to be directly about the Mayflower sailing, or can they just be the city expressing its voice? (This is not an exhaustive list of questions)

What support is out there, how much do we want to keep sharing what we are all doing, how shall we make this happen?

15:30 The Plan – Actions & Next Steps for Everyone

16:00 End of Day
