POPPIES: WAVE AND WEEPING WINDOW
Autumn 2016, FREE Literacy CPD day
To mark the Poppies tour, specially presented by 14-18 NOW to mark the centenary of the First World War, an exciting learning programme has been devised for P3 – S2 Literacy, Art and History teachers.
The dramatic sculptures ‘Poppies: Wave and Weeping Window’, by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, are currently touring sites in the UK.
Previously seen as part of the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at the Tower Of London in 2014, the sculpture, ‘Poppies: Weeping Window’, will be on display at The Black Watch Castle and Museum until 25 September.
As part of our learning offer to schools we are inviting P3 – S2 teachers to participate in a FREE CPD and guided tour. This training session will be a last chance for teachers to see the sculpture before it moves to Caernarfon Castle, Wales.
The half-day session will provide:
· Classroom strategies using the sculpture for promoting pupil talk
· Literacy focussed activity to generate rich writing outcomes
· Practical lesson plans for using the sculptures as a platform to explore the First World War and local history units
· A take-away teacher’s pack with a raft of lesson plans across P3 - S2 as well as opportunities for linked school visits
