Welcome to Populus: The Real People of Roman Britain. Join us for a fascinating online event where Paddy Lambert from Oxford Archaeology will explore how archaeology can reveals the lives of the people who lived, and died, in Roman Britannia.. Join us on Thursday September 25th, 2025 at 19:30 GMT.

'Roman Britain was not a single monolith, but a bewilderingly complex series of human experiences which will never be fully understood. The actual people who lived there, in all of their complex dynamism, poignant similarities and bewildering strangeness can be lost under the weight of archaeological 'big data'. However, archaeological works reveal evidence for those real lives every day, from scratched graffiti on pots to scientific analysis of their remains. Hidden in these are the weird, wonderful and fascinating real people and their real lives, which present a complex view of many different 'Roman Britains'

This presentation will present some of the tales of the practicalities of living, working and dying in the province of Britannia - told through the prisms of objects, places and physical remains. It is 'Horrible Histories' for adults and it's a journey that may surprise you.

This presentation will take place via Zoom, and will be followed by a Q&A session. As with all our talks, tickets are free, but we welcome donations when booking a ticket to help us cover our costs. Attendees will receive a link by email after registration, and reminder emails two days before the talk. The meeting room will open to the public at 7:15pm GMT with the talk starting at 7:30pm GMT.
