Event description
Pornification – An exploration of the impact of pornography upon children and young people

About this Event

Course Description:

This full day course is part of our multi-agency training programme aimed at any staff, volunteers and carers working with or supporting young people.

Training is FREE to all those working in Nottingham City and Southern Boroughs (Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe).

Training aims:

The course will be delivered by outreach and health promotion staff and will create a forum to enable participants to discuss the impact of pornography upon young people’s values and attitudes. It will provide a safe environment in which to explore how their own personal views may help or hinder their direct work with young people.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • An increased understanding of the law.
  • Developed their skills and confidence to talk to young people about this sensitive subject within a RSE framework.
  • An increased awareness of current curriculum resources to support them in their work.
  • A clear understanding of support services (role of Chandos) and how to signpost into them.
  • An awareness of the psychological impact of pornography upon young people’s sexual relationships.

Generation Z are the first generation to grow up having had unregulated, immediate access to pornography at the click of a button, but what does pornography really teach young people about sex and relationships?

Whilst pornography may be a normalised part of growing up, professionals and carers often struggle to have open and honest discussions about the potential impact on their views and expectations of sex and relationships.

A highly politicised and sensitive topic, it is both the remit and responsibility of all those working with and caring for children and young people to enable them to navigate their way around the messages they are exposed to within the world of adult sexually explicit content, at the same time encouraging them to become critical digital thinkers.

The accessibility, affordability and anonymity provided by the Web has put adult content right at the fingertips of children and young people and to make matters worse, conflicting research leaves many parents and professionals confused about its impact.
