Event description

Description

This training aims to raise awareness of the impact of pornography and sexting on young people’s sexual health and increase knowledge regarding the legal framework around this. The training also equips workers with the knowledge and skills to proactively address these issues with young people. Social networks are how many young people communicate with one another, however we are increasingly hearing stories of young people sharing pictures and information with people they have never met and do not know. Understanding the pressures and why young people do this will help you work with young people to resist the pressure they face.

In this training, participants will gain knowledge and skills about the influences and pressures young people face as they develop and explore their emerging sexuality.

Participants will be able to:

•explain the messages young people receive that influence their sexual life, relationships and self-esteem

•identify the potential impact of modern media (including social networks, pornography and celebrity culture) and key messages to support young people to negotiate it safely

•describe how to support young people to make informed choices about their sexual life

•describe how to encourage young people to think about the importance of positive friendships to build self esteem

•describe how to equip young people with the skills to say no to sex they don’t want and to explore intimacy and sensuality in non-sexual ways.

This training is delivered by our education specialists who work with young people on a day to day basis, either in schools, colleges or youth hubs or in our Brixton clinic. This training will be particularly useful for non-specialist teachers teaching PSHE for the first time, or for those with responsibility for leading on PSHE in schools or colleges.

"On one hand this was a really tough day, because the threat is so great. On the other hand it was really positive as Brook gave us so many strategies to support us and our students”. Secondary school teacher, Medway.

“It was excellent to look at social media and sexting in a different way, instead of just saying "this is bad". We know that doesn't work with young people so why do we keep on saying it. I liked how Brook dealt with this". Youth Worker, Essex.
