Event description
Port Glasgow History Walk with Inverclyde Bothy and Inverclyde Tourist Group

About this Event

Join us in this our first Historic Walk of Port Glasgow. The walk is presented by Inverclyde Bothy in partnership with Inverclyde Tourist Group to celebrate Port Glasgow's rich cultural heritage and today's vibrant community. Meet at the main entrance of Tesco's Port Glasgow at 10.15 for a 10.30 start.

Learn how Port Glasgow was originally a sleepy village called Newark, built around the Castle and how it became the main port for the city of Glasgow importing tobacco, sugar, cotton, hemp & iron. We will see how the traditional industries of shipbuilding, rope and sail making developed into world leaders. The first ocean going steam powered ship in Europe, the Comet, was built in Port Glasgow and transformed shipping throughout the world. We will visit the wonderful murals depicting the town's heritage and culture.

The walk is about 1.4 miles and is mostly on the flat using good pavements and paths. It will take no more than 2 hours.

Please bring suitable clothing and footwear. We will cover a distance of approximately 2 miles. Minimum age: 16

Spaces on this tour are limited so if you register then can no longer attend, please do let us know.
