Event description

Description

This is no ordinary bridge! Described as a “Wonder Bridge” by the press, and one of the top 3 engineering inventions of WW2 by Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, this bridge was put together like Meccano in a few hours. It made a huge contribution towards ending WW2.

The example on Port Meadow was erected by the Royal Engineers in September 1947, to replace a footbridge washed away by the March floods in that year.

Using period photos, with some short wartime newsreel film clips, this talk will explain the history and use of the Bailey Bridge during WW2 and afterwards.

All money raised through our events goes towards the development of the new museum.

We know the cost of this ticket is more than the advertised price, however using this fantastic booking website comes at a cost. We are passing on the handling fee so that you have the choice to book in advance and avoid disappointment on the day.
