Sculpting a portrait in clay can be a very rewarding experience. This course will explore how to observe heads – how to see their differences and similarities, and in turn learn how to translate this understanding into a sculpture which captures a likeness of the sitter. During the five days a life-sized clay portrait of a live sitter will be built on an armature, then prepared for firing. This concentrated modelling will be interspersed with fun exercises - with clay and without - to help train up the eye and hands. This course will be taught in a way suitable for those with experience of sculpting in clay and those new to it. Course fee includes materials. Firing is not included, however, advice on how to prepare the piece for firing and where to get the piece fired (at a kiln/pottery) will be shared during the course.
Days: Monday - Friday
Times: 11:30am -5:30pm
Dates: 15th - 19th August 2016

About Phoenix Brighton Arts Courses
Phoenix Brighton’s arts courses provide a unique mix of high quality workshops aimed at practicing and aspiring artists and art lovers. They are suitable for anyone (from beginners upwards unless otherwise stated) who wants to learn new skills from professional artists and would like to meet likeminded people in a supportive and creative environment. We normally provide all the basic materials unless stated in the course descriptions. You need to register in advance as some popular courses fill up very quickly.
All courses are aimed at adults (over 18) unless otherwise stated. Course fees are kept as low as possible to encourage everyone to participate in the arts, including those on low incomes but not eligible for benefits, such as many artists. Therefore we do not offer separate concessionary rates for members of the public. We are unable to offer discounted rates for other reasons, for instance if you are unable to attend all the sessions, unless the course has already started and has unfilled spaces.
We accept payment online by PayPal, credit or debit card (as a guest without starting a PayPal account) and offline via cheque (choose the 'show other payment methods' option under the 'order now' button for this option). We regret we do not have the facility to take card payments over the telephone or in person. To pay by card click 'order now' and choose the second option (underneath the pay by PayPal option).
