Portraits and the Figure Workshop with Anthony Barrow
Sun 26 March 2017, 10:00 – 16:00 BST
Anthony is returning to Calder Graphics offering a series of workshop designed to cover all aspects of painting.
This workshop will start with preparing cartridge paper with Acrylic Gesso, how to draw the portrait with handouts, using Willow charcoal, using tonal values, glazing with acrylic colours, removing tonal values, reworking, adding more colour and a final varnish.
Attendees will need good, quality cartridge paper (available at Calder Graphics). We need to cut this into a square section 52 x 52 cms or smaller but of a square format, which will be taped to a large drawing board using good quality, strong masking tape. We are then going to prime this paper with Winsor and Newton Galeria Acrylic Gesso (to get the best finish), applied thickly with a 2 inch decorators brush, leaving the brush marks as texture. We can do this on the day and dry the gesso with hairdryers before the session, making sure it is completely dry before using the charcoal.
Other materials on the day will be Willow charcoal, compressed charcoal, an eraser, kitchen roll, a 2 inch soft decorators brush, some acrylic paint for glazing.....the colour doesn't really matter something warm.... red, burnt sienna, burnt umber and something cool.....ultramarine blue etc.
Also needed will be something to to fix the charcoal (hairspray), a water-based acrylic varnish. You will also need a dish cloth (rough material) and some white pastel for the finishing touches.
Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:
1 x Table Top or free standing easel (limited free standing easels)
,1 x 13 x 17 12mm Warp resistant MDF Board
1 x Paint Pot
1 x Palette or Plate
Limited sundry products are also available if you forget anything.
Refreshments are available all day (tea, coffee, biscuits) and there will be a lunch break of approximately one hour. You can bring your own lunch and food is available to purchase on the day through the Blue Rooms Cafe. They serve both hot and cold meals and offer a 20% discount to everyone attending the event. Orders will be taken at the start of the day.
Please note the Blue Rooms is closed for classes run on Sunday's although there are plenty of alternatives in the town centre.
