Description

"Whenever I paint a portrait, I lose a friend." - John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)

The cautionary words of one of the finest portrait artists of two centuries. A likeness is difficult to capture, but the popular idea that it is only achievable if you have some mysterious, magical talent that is beyond the grasp of ordinary beings is far from true. In fact, the secret to success is no a secret at all really. The basis of all good portraiture is in knowing how to measure. Make the mouth a fraction too long or the nose to short, you haven't really failed, just depicted someone else!

In these 10 x 2 hour sessions, you will learn how to look closely at and measure the features; how to understand the proportions of the face; what constitutes 'character'; how to shade and use tonal values and how to depict flesh tones in colour.

Cost includes the hire of a sitter for five weeks.

Tables and chairs, a roll of newsprint paper and some easels are provided. Please bring a drawing board, paper or pad and your preferred drawing media. Materials for work in colour will be discussed later in the course.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

14:00 to 16:00

Mondays: 25 September; 02, 16, 30 October; 06, 13, 20, 27 November; 04, 11 December 2017
