More information on the Positive Cycles scheme:

Cycling is wonderful. Everyone knows that. It’s great for all ages, for all classes and cultures. Boys and girls, men and women. There is something about getting on a bike and just riding that is the good for the soul. It is delight. It is pleasure. It is the very epitome of freedom.

It’s also great fun, great exercise and a way of bring friends, families and communities together.

The Positive Cycles Project, run by local charity Positive Steps in Oldham, is trying to get more people from the local communities out of their armchairs and onto bikes so they too can feel the excitement, the exhilaration, the joy.

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford a new bike. Let’s face it, bikes are expensive, sometimes reaching up into the thousands and sometimes taking money out of the weekly budget to spend on what many view as a luxury is simply not an option despite the potential health benefits.

This is where the Positive Cycles Project @ Positive Steps is looking to make a difference in Oldham and the surrounding areas. Taking donations of old and unused bikes from the public is the first step. The second is the cleaning and recycling process. Working with young offenders, Positive Cycles services these unwanted bikes and makes them roadworthy. The young people gain valuable AQA qualifications whilst undertaking these tasks too, giving them a stepping stone into further training and education, a path away from offending.

Finally these newly refurbished bikes are sold back to the local community at a massive discount, making cycling an affordable pastime for even the poorest families. Some of the bikes are actually given away completely free to some of the people who access other services provided by Positive Steps. There is also a partnership link with the Transport for Greater Manchester’s ‘Bike Back to Work’ scheme, giving bikes to jobseekers, allowing them to get to interviews and even to their new places of employment.
